Do you need a webcam with more versatile lens options? Have I got the kit for you. But first... What am I drinking? Tonight I picked up the Abominable Winter Ale from Hopworks Urban Brewery (Portland, OR). Four hops and six malts were used, but it's not an overly "hoppy" beer. Very smooth, with some spicy and floral notes. Great for the incoming cold weather. Shopping for a Logitech C920? Since its launch, it has been THE go-to USB camera when it comes to both price and performance. But what do you do when you want a more versatile webcam? Well, if you’re Kurokesu, you remove the lens, engineer and mill an aluminum housing complete with a CS lens mount. You can receive this kit in one of two forms. In my case, if you already have a C920 and don't mind a challenge, I received the housing, USB port and an IR LowPass filter, and disassembled the C920 myself. There is a bit of very fine solder work to be done if you choose to go this route, including scraping a new ground pad on the rear of the C920 PCB. If it’s your first go round with this, I recommend option two which is a predone kit referred to as the C920 reworked CS kit. This comes ready to work straight out of the box. All of the positives of the C920 are still present. For a webcam, tt still has very good color reproduction and dynamic range, and is able to capture true 1920x1080 at 30fps. Using the camera is plug and play in most cases, as there are no special drivers or settings to fuss with. Audio capture works as it did before through the microphone grill cutouts. Gone is the standard 5ft USB cable, replaced with a USB 2.0 Mini-B port, allowing for much longer or shorter cables. Overall, the camera did exactly what I wanted. It provided a slightly better image, while allowing for many more use cases without complicating the equipment setup.
